Zusammenfassung: Ten years after the fire disaster the Anna Amalia Library wishes to take stock and to stage an exhibition called “Restoration after the Fire” with the aim of making the complex subject of restoration accessible to the public by showing among other things two volumes, each with a fabric and leather binding. Whereas one volume will be displayed completely restored, the other volume will be shown at a specific moment during the restoration process. There will be a photographic documentation in the catalogue showing those working steps wich cannot be seen in the exhibition. But how can a restoration process be photographically representet? A workflow for the photographer and the conservator is intended to describe and work out wich aspects must be taken into consideration when recounting the story of a restoration process in pictures. Furthermore the role of photography in restoration documentation will be examined. Does photography begin where words fail to describe damage adequately, and what are the limits of photography when used for the purposes of documentation? The following plates will illustrate examples of some of the working steps involved in the restoration of a volume with a leather and fabric binding.
