Zusammenfassung: In the present master thesis a trunk chest from the first half of the 18th century is introduced, which has a high diversity of material with five different materials (wood, leather, metal, textile and paper). The main focus in this thesis is on the outer face of the chest with its materials wood, leather and metal. Related to the ornamental decoration of the brass nails of the chest, there was no other comparable object found.

The intention of this thesis is to write an examination report and develop a conservation concept. This work starts with an art and cultural historical analysis of the object in relation to production history of trunk chests and their request of transports with horse carriages. Afterwards the different materials are analysed with focus on their fabrication, aging and state as well as their influence on each other. A special aim of this thesis was the examination of the material leather and its problematic with fracture, gaps and loss of the grain as well as loose parts. Based on the findings there will follow a concept
for conservation and storage with consideration of the different material demands and conditions.
