Zusammenfassung: The dissertation is about decorative painting that was extensively used in Petra, which along with gilding must have provided a colourful impression of the city. Scientific analysis of over 160 paint and plaster samples has shown that pigments were mainly ones that were common at the time and described by the classical writers. From the technological point of view, the study has shown that although many features of the decorative surfaces in Petra have parallels in contemporary cultures, there are still other features that are peculiar to the site. The dissertation is the first study that provides a comprehensive view regarding the painted façades and interior walls of Petra. It consists of 269 pages with over 150 illustrations and diagrams, showing the sampling areas, analytical results and colour reconstructions.
