Zusammenfassung: The thesis focuses on the „Nietzsche library“, a private reference collection assembled in the late 19th century. In view of the period of origin, it may be assumed that the most likely conservation issues will be high acidity and reduced mechanical strength of the paper. An item-by-item condition survey led to the conclusion that no adequate methods are currently available for diagnosing the latter in undismantled books. This, as is shown by measurements of mechanical strength on untreated and treated paper samples, is an impediment to the development of a qualified assessment of conservation needs. The advantages and risks of selected mass-treatment methods were examined. Various cellulose ethers were compared with regard to their behavior in solutions of low polarity, in which they might be utilized to consolidate the paper without causing damage to the various ink and colored pencil markings that determine the particular intrinsic value of the library. In conclusion, the study outlines a possible approach to evaluating the collection’s specific conservation requirements.
