Zusammenfassung: The technical system of the water tower of the Berlin-Schöneweide railway depot, which has been in operation for 80 years, consists of a multi-part pipe system, an electric centrifugal pump, a double tank (Intze I and Barkhausen) and a rare water deferrisation system. It reflects the permanent operability of the water supply for steam-powered traffic in the 20th century. A photographic, graphic and descriptive inventory of the technology makes it possible to understand how it works and analyse its condition. The focus is on the problem of sources of pollutants from the inventory of former industrial enterprises. Using room air analysis technology according to DIN regulations and SBSE methodology, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are tested on the basis of bituminous insulations on water pipes for their damage potential for the future subsequent use of the water tower, so that these can be retained as evidence of early corrosion protection in railways. In the action plan, based on a conservation concept, cleaning, consolidation and climate regulation are developed.
