| Zusammenfassung: | This thesis discusses the history of book conservation in the early 20th century. The focus is on measures for preservation and maintenance of the collection at the Austrian National Library between 1899 and 1939. This period was shaped by the bookbinder and book conservator Alois Liska (1866 – ?). Documents of the Austrian National Library, a selection of books from the collection restored by Liska, his documentations and his own publications were used to illustrate his methods of conservation. The development of book conservation, with all its materials, skills and techniques has its origin in bookbinding. Therefore, an overview of the bookbinding profession in the 19th and early 20th century is given. In particular, the origin of book conservation, the training for apprentices and masters, and the materials used by bookbinders are addressed. It is demonstrated that at the beginning of the 20th century, a rethinking of the preservation of documents and conservation work took place, and also ethical aspects were increasingly considered. |
