Zusammenfassung: We will outline paper conservation practices in two Viennese collections, which were carried out during the period of 1978–1987 at the Wien Museum and 1985–2002 at the Kupferstichkabinett. This study emphasizes on bleaching methods and treatment of iron gall ink corrosion. Our research is primarily based on conservation protocols kept at the museum during the period studied. Furthermore, theme-centered expert interviews were conducted with conservators who had worked for the collection. A literature review and other written sources such as studio journals and lecture notes complement the source material.
During the period under study the main bleaching agents at the Wien Museum were chloramine-T and hydrogen peroxide combined with diethyl ether. At the Kupferstichkabinett iron gall ink corroded objects were treated mainly by watering. At the assessment of long-term effects only objects bleached with hydrogen peroxide showed damages. This thesis was written in cooperation with ´´The development of conservation in the years 1950–2000 in Austria: tacit knowledge and disciplinary professionalization´´, a Oral History project at the Institute of Conservation at the Academy of fine Arts Vienna.
