Zusammenfassung: The thesis deals with the examination and conservation of the artwork "ohne Titel" (1971) by Loys Egg, which has been in the ownership of the Artothek des Bundes in Vienna since 1972. The particular characteristic of this large-format work of art are the relief-like, organically shaped applications on the surface of the painting. Due to mechanical damages, conservation treatments were necessary on the applications, and the picture surface as well as the support. The applications consist of closed-cell rigid foam, which is brittle and degraded on the losses. The main focus of this work is the rigid foam which was identified by pyrolysis-GC/MS as a phenol-formaldehyde (PF)- rigid foam. Detailed examinations of the artwork as well as extensive test series for the evaluation of materials and methods for the consolidation of the degraded PF rigid foam and for the filling of the losses were carried out. At an exemplary place on the art work the surface of one big loss could be consolidated and closed with filler. As a consolidation medium the evaluated low-bloom 1.5% gelatine (Novo Tec) with aerosol nebulizer and an increasing concentration of the gelatine (with airbrush and fine syringe) was used. The loss in the PF rigid foam could eventually be closed with the previously tested filler mass of polyethylene (PE) flakes and Arbocel® 1000 in a ratio of 2:1 combined with high bloom 2.5% photo gelatine.
