The collection of the Innsbrucker Zeughaus includes, apart from other war relics, a machine gun from World War I. The diploma thesis focuses on the review of the technological build-up and the mechanical function of the weapon, with the help of a reconstruction of genuine 100-year-old technical drawings. It has an easily damaged browning, which requires careful handling regarding the reduction of iron corrosion products. An overview of the specially developed concepts, its testing and implementation to the treatment of this problem is offered. By means of an evaluation in the German-speaking countries, four established transparent coating materials were selected and afterwards tested by analytical examinations for their anti-corrosion effect and ageing behaviour.
