Zusammenfassung: The object being investigated consists of a double-leaf, pierced-carved wooden door where each half has a height of 127 cm, width of 65 cm and depth of 5 cm. The door originates from Japan and since 1910 has been located at the GRASSI Museum of Ethnology in Leipzig. Each half of the door consists of three different parts which have been produced separately and subsequently been put together. The outer frames of the doors have two layers. Under a red-painted layer, there is a Urushi-lacquer containing seashell-tinsel. The upper part is decorated with an ornamental golden grid. The middle frame is decorated with plum-tree blossoms. The lower halves of each door contain carvings depicting the mythical creature Kirin. For manufacturing the last two parts, similar techniques were used, which seemingly are different from the outer frames. Therefore it is likely that the door wings are composed of art objects of different origin and later assembled. The polychrome layer of the doors shows extensive flaking. The protein binder has been badly damaged. The door was secured in 2005 with wrapping tissue and methylcellulose.
The manufacturing techniques, the concept for the facing and conservation methods for the door have been investigated. A review of the materials and methods for temporary preservation of the flaking paint has been conducted and the chosen materials and methods have been tested in a two-part series of experiments. Further concepts for the conservation and restoration of the studied object are being presented.
