The subject of this thesis, a fragment of a polychrome wooden sculpture depicting Saint Mauritius, now in the Thüringer Museum Eisenach. This sculpture is dated in the late Gothic period, showing the holy knight Mauritius in full armour with his attributes, standing on a pedestal. It had been created in 1500 by Gottwalt von Lohr for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Burglemnitz and, following its destruction, was stored temporarily in the attic until it was given to the Thüringer Museum Eisenach in 1940. Probably in the year 1525, the time of iconoclasm, the sculpture’s arms with attached attributes, the legs and parts of the face were removed. The fragmentary character and the high level of destruction lead to the parish’s decision to remove the fragmentary sculpture from the church building. The attribution to Gottwalt von Lohr was possible through a comparison object by this artist in the church of Burglemnitz. By means of technological investigations, the manufacturing technique and original polychromy was established, followed by a mapping and a reconstruction. Only a few conservation measures that were implemented in the past were noticed. After a necessary consolidation, various methods for an ideal cleaning were tested and applied. A concept of measures for the restoration and the subsequent presentation at an exhibition was created.
