Zusammenfassung: This Master-Thesis focuses on a polychrome, enthroned Madonna with the Jesus-child on her lap, dated to the end of the 13th or the early 14th century respectively. This sculpture is part of the collection of the Museum Schnütgen in Cologne.
The first part of this thesis deals with a thorough technological investigation of the wooden sculpture, which has been in the possession of the Museum Schnütgen since the 1930s. Beginning with the art historical research of the chronological and regional classification of the Madonna originating from the Spanish culture, this work examines the construction of the substructure and the polychrome painting as well as the actual condition including later re-workings and over-paintings. The results are based on microscopic observations as well as on examinations with UV-radiation and X-rays. Further information is obtained by cross-sections and various analyses.
In the second part of the thesis, the present state of the endangered object is examined and the reasons for the various damage-phenomena are analysed. With this information, a concept for future measures of conservation and restoration has been developed.
In the past, the sculpture had undergone an extensive wax-treatment. Thus, a further emphasis lies on the study of wax-treated objects. The focus is mainly on attempts to reduce the wax deposits and consolidate loose areas and flaking paint on hydrophobic wax surfaces with various consolidants, as well as on the adhesion of different putties to such surfaces. The results are recorded in this documentation.
