Zusammenfassung: The roman wall paintings in the ancient choir of the church St. Wenzel in Thörey are
possibly the only traditional part of a great segmented painting, which once also adorned
the former apse. Despite being in a fragmentary condition, valuable outlines and details
are preserved. Thinking of the long period this piece of art has survived, it is surprising
and pleasing that there were no changes made to the original painting.
Analysing the condition it became apparent that wall painting and masonry have to be
treated as one system. They influence each other which causes changes. Besides, positive
changes as well as negatives ones where caused by previous techniques of conservation.
For the conservation of the wall painting it is necessary to give it more attention in the
everyday life. Thörey church is one of the roman sites of the "Transromanica" in
Thuringia. The discussion concerning the techniques of conservation showed that no
consolidant fulfils the required criteria. Debating the different materials, synthetic resins
were considered the best. Concurrently silicic acid ester was found to be suitable for
consolidating chalking paint, but there need to be further research.
