Zusammenfassung: The bachelor thesis deals with a late gothic wooden sculpture “St. Barbara (?)”, which was stored in
the protestant parish rooms in Gangloffsömmern (Thüringen) for a long time.
By means of a research on the history of reception a first possible connection to the existing wings of
the altar of the protestant St. Gangolf church Gangloffsömmern has been established.
Two altar wings with four wooden sculptures each at the feast side are handed down by the church.
The working sides of the wings are provided with paintings.
An art historical and historico‐cultural examination of the sculpture was carried out with the aim of a
stylistic and chronological classification.
With the help of technological examinations the technique of work and the technique of polychromy
should be explained.
The bulk of the work deals with the recording of the condition of the sculpture, the analysis of the
possible reasons for its damage, and the earlier conservation and restoration interventions.
Consequently, many results were found which give reasons for its appearance. Two other sculptures
from the altar wings were used as comparison objects to support the belonging of the sculpture of St.
Barbara (?) to the other traditional inventory of the church. The results of the scientific examination
as well as those of the macroscopic and microscopic observation will serve as a basis for the
conclusions made in this thesis.
The conservation status of the sculpture and the results of all investigations will be documented in
pictures and text.
The sculpture had a layer, because fragments of the layer will be found. Therefore the sculpture “St.
Barbara (?)” has lost the layer because of radical restoration methods. The sculpture has probably
been stripped.
In the past, stripping of carvings with leach or alkaline agents was a common restoration technique.
The bachelor thesis discusses a potential and temporal context.
The bachelor thesis provides a scientific contribution to the dealing with sculptures that are
aesthetically impaired by the process of stripping. Although these carvings often cause aesthetic and
conservation problems, only few investigations have specifically dealt with the historic processes of
caustic paint stripping and the after‐treatments.
Based on the results of the investigations a concept for the later presentation of the sculpture has
been developed while taking account of possible conservation considerations.
