Zusammenfassung: Auxiliary supports were installed on the reverse since the beginning of painting on wooden panels in order to stabilize them and to hold them flat. This thesis conveys the historical development and the change of structures over time until today. It focuses on auxiliary supports that were developed after 1950, as the basic idea of these flexible systems is still relevant nowadays: With regards to the long-term preservation of the panel, the natural warping tendency of wooden panels should be allowed within secure limits and – in contrast to previous designs – not impeded or obstructed anymore.
In this thesis, the auxiliary supports developed in North America and Western Europe from 1950 until today are brought together in written and visual form. Furthermore, their construction as well as advantages and disadvantages are depicted. Hence, this paper gives an overview to conservators and can serve as a basic information. It can also serve as a support for decisions about stabilizing fragile panel paintings.
