Zusammenfassung: All conservation codes of ethics clearly state an obligation to record every step of the work upon the object in question as well as to communicate all information gained. This master thesis is concerned with various different concepts of documenting the conservation process with particular attention to the documentation of the object in its current state. The structure and content of documentary records of conservation are analysed and their potential communicative power examined against the background of interdisciplinary approaches to conservation. Easy access to records is the prerequisite of any successful communication. In addition, this thesis also examines the question of whether combining the documentation of the current state of the object with digital processes is reasonable and feasible. To this end, using examples of manuscripts, those characteristics of the object to be conserved which actually require documenta-tion are established and systematically presented. To date digital technology as used in conservation is utilized in order to make information available everywhere and at all times. In this context the question is discussed of whether this technology might not also be suitable for establishing the state of the material and the risks involved in work upon the manuscripts, since the high quality and the standardised processes of digital technology could present a valuable complement to the usual documentary photo-graphs. Additionally, the problem of easy access to the conservation documentation would be solved.
