Zusammenfassung: The long case clock V 2 from the workshop of J. F. Spindler is a masterpiece of the so called “Friderizianisches Rococo”. It is decorated with floral marquetry which used to be colourful at the time of construction. Rich bronzes from the workshop of J. M. Kambly are also attached to the case. Since its construction it was part of the interior of the castle Neues Palais, Sanssouci/Potsdam. After World War II the clock was shipped to the Soviet Union as „looted art“. After its return to Germany in the 1950s, it was heavily reworked.
The clock was technologically examined. The alterations were documented in detail. The possibilities of reconstructing the marquetries were analysed and a sample of reconstruction of the pendula case door was made. Furthermore, a concept is suggested for dealing with the alterations including ethical aspects.
