Seitenübersicht:

Zusammenfassung: In general, patches on a canvas support become obvious by deformations of the canvas, differing craquelure in the paint layer or bulging edges around the tear. Therefore patches are rarely used for tear mending or as a supplementary treatment after thread-by-thread tear mending. Experimental research about patches on canvas support is rare. This diploma thesis with its first comprehensive test series, is therefore the basis of research about the applicability of patches. In the conducted tests, all experimental patches were applied with a thin film of BEVA® 371, using 5 different application techniques. The research emphasis on dummy canvases was to evaluate the behaviour of 10 selected patches. Further research focuses on the tensile strength of patches applied on canvas strips and the patches diffusion permeability. This research attempts to clarify damaging phenomena and find methods of problem resolution. Applying patches appears simple, but in conclusion it becomes clear that there are reservations when using them for tear mending in a canvas support.
