Zusammenfassung: The two-piece dress, which is dated 1777, is fully quilted. In this context the historical development of quilted textiles is illustrated, including a debate on the most important wadding and quilting techniques. As a representative piece of its time, the dress and its later alterations are enigmatic. The contribution to costume research is based on the mapping of old repairs and modifications, a technological analysis of the present condition, as well as a chart of the findings. The practical work focuses on the consolidation of the damaged top material as part of a mutilayered quilted fabric. Traditional techniques of textile conservation will be discussed indicating applicability, as well as the adapted requirements of a surface which has been structured with decorative stitching.
