Zusammenfassung: In the monasteries of the area of Lüneburger Heide exist the largest medieval chest stock Lower Saxony preserved in situ. The historic buildings show climatic and structural defects, which are the cause for substantial and constructive damage to a variety of chests.
The present work gives instructions for conservation and how to optimize their status situation for the furniture of the monasteries Wienhausen and Ebstorf.
In two other bachelorthesis were made first state observations and determination concerning the need of action for the chests in both monasteries. Based on those works, in the present masterthesis is done the determination of the stability of the chests affecting causes and sorting.
The lack of stability of the chests can be attributed to fundamental, structural causes.
Therefore, on the one hand proposals for the preventive conservation regarding the substance of conservation are given and on the other hand constructive measures to promote stability of the chests are developed.
To classify the chests into types of treatment and necessity of treatment, first of all took place the examination of the damaged wood substance. Using various methods such as nailtest, ultrasonic- and drilling resistance measurement, the wooden chest has been checked on its significant capacity. The ultrasound measurement has provided the most useful results.
With the help of the bearing capacity determination could be identified the further action to improve the stability of the chests. In this way the chests, which require any stability-enhancing measure, could be separated from those with a need for action.
The spectrum for conservation actions extends from the leveling of the height difference in floor misalignment or different long legs, consolidation open construction to the design of supporting structures to relieve the unsustainable legs.
Furthermore suggestions are provided for insulation to keep together the chests on stone floor before the damaging influence of soil moisture.
