Zusammenfassung: The polychromic Roman sarcophagus is located in the Albana crypt, beneath the Quirin chapel in the graveyard of St. Matthias’ abbey in Trier, Germany. With its original paintings, it is one of the very few well preserved polychromic sarcophagi dating from the second half of the 3rd century AD. The sandstone sarcophagus is decorated on all sides with figurative and ornamental reliefs; including large areas of original paintings. These paintings consists of a calcium carbonate primer base, painted with a polychromic combination of red and yellow ochre and green soil containing celadonit. The environmental conditions, the original physical properties, and the use of new construction materials has resulted in considerable weathering of the stone and paintings as a result of moisture, salts, and microorganisms. In addition to the historical classification of this work of art, the objectives of the study were, to investigate the current status of the sarcophagus, with particular emphasis on the painting technique, the extend deterioration and the causes for this. The results of this study were the basis for creating a concept of restoration and conservation.
