Zusammenfassung: Although UV fluorescence analysis has frequently been used since the 1920ies to examine furniture varnishes, the method has not been fully understood by many conservators leading commnly to overestimations and misinterpretations of the findings. Therefore at first, this work deals with the history and the fundamental principles of UV fluorescence analysis. In the following chapter, the statements given in specialist publications concerning the fluorescence of organic materials in general and furniture varnishes in particular are summarized. Different pieces of equipment for generating UV beams are presented and the means of the optical recording as well as the spectroscoptical measurement of fluorescence are explained. Trials were carried out applying UV fluorescence analysis to artificially aged samples of different varnishes on different wooden carriers (partly based on historical recipes). The objective was to compare the theory with the practical experiences to establish the potentials and limits of the method regarding the investigation and identification of historical materials in the field of furniture conservation.
