Zusammenfassung: Transparent coatings on historic furniture have always been affected by the influence of light, climatic fluctuation, soiling, wear and other physical damage, accelerating their deterioration, especially if the furniture was and is still in use. A case study of a 19th century table is presented in this study. The irreversibly damaged coating is to be replaced by French Polish. To prevent further deterioration of the table’s surface, a more stable coating is desired. Ethical concerns on the use of alternative coating materials to protect historic objects are taken into consideration. Samples of modified shellac and synthetic resins were prepared and artificially aged in order to examine their optical and physical properties as well as to determine whether they meet specific conservation needs.
