Zusammenfassung: Gilded mirror frames have been appreciated as precious artifacts and representative deco-rative furniture since they found their way into private und public interiors. The 18th century gilded mirror frame examined in this thesis tells a different story. Severe damage and extreme aging have not only affected its visual appearance but also jeopardized large parts of the multilayered gilding. In a first step the art historical context of the frame is determined, then its construction and gilding techniques as well as its condition are examined. Based on these findings, various treatment options are developed and discussed applying a specific decision-making model for conservation purposes. The final treatment plan considers the multifaceted meaning of mirror frames in general as well as the historical significance of the frame in hand, its condition and future role in a museum context. Further central considerations are whether to preserve or remove over-gilding and bronze.
