Zusammenfassung: | The focus of this dissertation is the reconstruction of a previously restored Roman period glass vessel called the Amphoriskos. The glass fragments were originally excavated in Luxembourgin 1853. However, it was not until the 1960’s that the pieces were first assembled using plaster of Paris. This piece will be re-restored during the course of this study. The study begins with the documentation of the existing condition of the artefact; the next chapter deals with the history of the Amphoriskos, followed by a general discussion of the properties of glass, including the different processes of corrosion. Scientific analysis supports the identification of unknown substances and structures in the Amphoriskos. The final chapters contain a summary of the literature related to glass adhesives and other complementary materials, followed by a discussion of different methods for reconstructing glass fragments. After careful evaluation of these methods, a suitable process is chosen. The study concludes with the documentation of the conservation treatment. |
