Characteristics of natural and semi-synthetic adhesives

Protein based adhesives as well as cellulose ethers and Funori derivatives were cast to films and artificially light aged. The results were compared by means of colorimetric measurements using UV-VIS spectroscopy. The very same range of adhesives were applied to pigmented samples and again compared with UV-VIS spectroscopy. The results show good ageing characteristics except of Funori, which tends to alter the most after ageing. The application on pigmented samples shows again good results when applied as aerosols. Not only the adhesive, but also the pigment is influencing the change of appearance. In the following, a new Funori product, TRI-Funori™, and an Instant Gelatine is tested. The latter two adhesives still need to be investigated so that they can be compared with the other range of adhesives. The group of adhesive choices can be even widened by looking at the Medium for Consolidation by Lascaux, an aqueous acrylic dispersion, which is in use since a few years. For specific tasks it might be a reasonable alternative. A pilot scheme of parameters will be presented based upon the findings to correlate a suitable adhesive to the equivalent damage scheme.

Andrea Pataki-Hundt acts as professor at the conservation programme conservation of documents, works of art on paper, photography, and illuminated manuscripts at the TH Köln, (CICS). Before that, from 1998 to 2017, she was research assistant of the conservation laboratory at the graduate conservation education programme for conservation of works of art on paper, archive- and library materials since 1998 at the State Academy of Art and Design Stuttgart, where she also obtained her diploma (1997) and her PhD (2005). In the year 1998 she was an advanced fellow at the Walters Art Museum Baltimore, supported by the Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD). From 2007 to 2009 she conducted a two-year postdoctoral research programme funded by the Landesstiftung Baden- Württemberg. In spring 2008 she was invited as a museum guest scholar at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
One specialisation of her is the consolidation of friable pigments on paper, parchment as well as modern supports. Within the PostDoc research she gained valuable results which she deepened and broadened with subsequent student projects.
