Corinna Grimm: Conservation of limestone- comparative examinations of selected strengthening agents for structural strengthening of Halberstädter Muschelkalk back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: The paper looks into the possibilities for structural strengthening of Halberstädter Muschelkalk. Comparative investigations are carried out on trial series of artificially softened drilling core, loose material and a crocket dismantled from the Halberstadt cathedral. The strengthening agents employed are epoxy, acrylic, polyurethane and silicone resins, and a modified silicic acid ester product. The effectiveness of the strengthening agents and the alterations to building-physical parameters are examined employing destructive and non-destructive methods of investigation: determination of the biaxial bending tensile strength, static and dynamic modulus of elasticity, water absorption, capability of steam diffusion, drilling resistance and hygric and thermal dilatation. None of the products was capable of producing in the rock a totally positive change of properties. The result is a restricted recommendation for strengthening.
