Abstract: The cathedral in Brandenburg/Havel has in the northern cloister at the 2nd floor an exposed design-program from the 15th century. It consists of a wall painting cycle on the sciences and arts as well as tendril painting with imaginative flowers and fruits in the vaulted caps. In a DFG (German Research Foundation) funded project in cooperation with the University of Paderborn, the HAWK has researched the artistic and restoration-science aspects of this design-program. As part of this master’s thesis, the changes that impair the perception of the paintings on the 2nd floor are to be examined more closely. The focus is on pigment-changes and other optical phenomena that falsify painting. These considerations focus on four selected areas from the vault and wall paintings in the design program. These areas should be interpreted and visualized with regard to the original appearance. The practical aim of this work is to visualize the original colouring of four selected areas of the wall painting cycle in the upper cloister into a modern painterly reconstruction. These painterly reconstructions are based on the analysis results, the phenomenal investigations and the findings of the painting. The information should be brought together here and the original appearance of the polychrome surfaces should be reproduced. It should also be considered whether an analogue drawing reconstruction makes sense in the age of advancing digitization.
