Abstract: The single‐action pedal harp discussed herein was built by Jean‐Henri Nadermann in Paris and dates
from the year 1785. The instrument is musically and technologically highly significant as it displays
early examples of particular trends in the development of harp construction.
The harp is considered to be a prototype of the damping mechanism “sourdine”, which was invented
by Jean Baptist Krumpholtz. Krumpholtz, a composer and virtuoso harpist, cooperated with
Nadermann in order to optimise the harp’s sound and its musicial potential.
In the text, a discussion of potential reconstruction of missing components of the sourdine precedes
the applied practical restoration measures.
Alongside conservation and restoration, the overall aim of the work was to visualise the
technologically unusual elements of the harp through their reconstruction. At the beginning of the
study, the harp was found in an altered state, contrary to the original construction. Therefore, the
reconstruction represents a return to the harp’s original state, with a sister‐harp, located in Paris,
used as a reference object.
