Abstract: For 20 years fragments of an altarpiece belonging to the church of Moßbach/eastern Thuringia had
been stored in a deposit of the protestant church of Thuringia in Apolda. The aim now was to present
the seven sculptures and the two altar panels again in the church of Moßbach. The retable was
created by craftsmen of the “Reußisch” school in the east of Thuringia around the year 1500. By
comparing the remaining pieces to other altars that have been completely maintained the original
design could be reconstructed. This conception includes the construction of a new retable containing
original parts with regard to the tradition of the “Reußisch” school. During the semester the
conception was partly implemented, whereas the conservation treatment (including consolidation,
adhesion and filling of the wood) was the main object. The restoration of the outer side wings was
completed.
