Overview:

Abstract: In the 1990s the bronze equestrian statue Friedrich Wilhelm IV. was coated with an acrylic varnish, which is considerably damaged today. On the basis of analysis of the damaged state and the composition of the aged coating different approaches, in order to detach the aged coating, are discussed. Furthermore the necessity of a new coating is scrutinized. The latest improvement in Germany’s air quality, particularly the sulphur dioxid emissions, under certain circumstances may allow the abandonment of a protective coating for outdoor bronzes.
