Overview:

Abstract: The Cycle of the Legend of Saint Ursula was created in 1492-96 by the Master of the Legend of Saint Ursula. The cycle consists of 21 paintings on canvas. Five of these belong to the LVR-LandesMuseum in Bonn and have been examined in regard to painting techniques and condition. The paint layer includes application techniques with press brocades, haloes in reliefs and decorations with metal leafs. The paintings have been damaged through former restoration treatments. They are lined, paint layers are pressed and overcleaned. Yellowed varnishes and discoloured retouchings interfere with the legibility. A concept for conservation and restoration treatment aims to contribute to the preservation. It discusses the handling with linings and a removal of varnish, retouchings and fillings.
