Anja Peter: Problems in the restoration of photo buttons Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This paper deals with problems in the restoration of photo buttons, which came into fashion at the beginning of the 20th century. The two photo buttons which have be restored consist of a
combination of a cellulose nitrate facing, collodion printing-out-paper and each with a tinplate photo carrier. The high-lustre surface is supposed to imitate enamel photos and this is the
reason why the bottons are called semi-enamel-pictures. This paper is divided in the following
topics: history of photo buttons, used materials, state of conditions with discussion of the
problematic nature of restoration and reflection as well as consideration of conservative and
restorative measures and their implementation. Finally, measure for preservation and storage
are proposed.
