Overview:

Abstract: The epitaph dating from 1585 shows the crucification of Christ and the Ahammer family, who lived in Rothenstein.
The introduction places the epitaph in the context of art history, followed by an analysis of the composition and condition of the paint layers.
The goal of this restoration is the epitaph’s new presentation in the Wenzelskirche, taking into account the climatic conditions and the acute presence of wood destroying insects at the site. The concept discusses the treatment of missing sections of the paint layers as well as the recent varnish coat. Furthermore, a procedural method for the construction of a new ornamental frame and reverse side protection is developed.
