Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the mural paintings from the French prison camp in the port area of Bremen. They date back to 1942-1945 and were removed in 1998. The first part of the work describes the historical context of the mural paintings. It explains the reasons for their removal at the time and the history of their restoration. The second part examines in detail one area of the paintings for condition and damage. Methods of natural sciences are employed in order to reveal the technique of the paintings. The results of these examinations constitute the basis of a new method of transfer that is introduced. Several experiments aim to determine the appropriate carrier materials. As part of a transfer, the mural painting "Aufstehen" gets a new movable support. The necessary measures for this transfer are explained.
