Overview:

Abstract: The sandstone masonry of the „Heilig Geist“ chapel in Bockenem shows severe grades of stone deterioration. The loss of the original surface is substantially caused by salt crystallization. For this reason laboratory trials were carried out using consolidants such as ethyl silicate and colloidal silica. Mechanical and especially hygric transport parameters of the „Schilfsandstein“ were examined with regard to a desalination measure afterwards. For the process of desalination two water poultices of different components were developed and applied on the consolidated stone surface by different techniques. Their effectiveness was investigated by means of optical methods and by determining the amount of soluable salt in the poultices.
