Johannes Pietsch: Two Gowns from the Bavarian National Museum Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Two gowns from the Bavarian National Museum in Munich which had, until now, never been studied or properly dated, were examined in terms of the materials used, the cut of the garments, the finish and the alterations. The exact measurements of each pattern component was of particular interest. Another important aspect of this work was to present the results of the research in the form of appropriate drawings.
The investigations, which included the technical examination of the cut, the analysis of the fabric and especially the execution of the seams, proved that one of the gowns was probably made in the 16th century and was altered extensively in later times. The materials and finish of the other garment indicate that it was produced in the 19th century. In addition, the research led to the conclusion that it is likely to be an exact copy of the older gown.
