Johanna Lang: The Nativity Scene of the Monastery-Church of the Carmelites in Reisach Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: As seen today, the nativity scene in Reisach (Rosenheim/Bavaria) is a disjointed collection. Original scene display, date of origin and artist are not known. Current storage and display conditions are a threat to its existence. Dissected components and overpainting impair the overall impression of the nativity scene as an entity. Original scenes, presentation and general impact of the nativity scene are reconstructed after a thorough investigation of its artistic and technological properties. Historical literary sources and comparable nativity scenes are drawn upon to determine the possible artist and date of manufacture. Recommendations for conservation and restoration are put forward, and the possibility of reconstructing some figures is discussed. An internet homepage about the nativity scene has been designed and its potential as a basis for comparative research amongst nativity scenes is pointed out.
