Abstract: Artistically, the church of St. Leopold (built 7905-14) in the Donaufeld area of Floridsdorf can be placed between the Historical Revival and Seecessionisl styles.
Built by the Augustinians of Klosterneuburg Abbey, the church was intended to manifest an ecclesiastical and political order in the industrial suburb of Floridsdorf for a rapidlyexpanding working-class congregation, which itself was a meltingpot of many nations of the Imperial monarchy. The interdependence of the location and the community shaped the design, while the decorative vocabulary reflects the turn of the century's fascination with new technologies and materials.
A central feature is the use of coloured metal alloys in the sheet-metal sculpture as well as the role of electric lighting as new media of artistic expression. The dissertation for Department of Conservation and Restoration utilises individual methods from a variety of disciplines, expanding and combining them in order to achieve an alternative perspective on the historical substance, and is closely linked to the conservation and restoration of the metalwork decoration undertaken 2002-2004.
