Abstract: The Conservation and Restoration of European Prints and Bookplates has had no general rules for replacing missing areas and retouching. There are no definitions of the terms "missing area" and "retouching". In this report the term "missing area" is defined and different types of missing areas and methods for their replacement are presented. In addition, the term "retouching" is explained, along with the potential methods and techniques for retouching. The ethical and aesthetical considerations and impact of infilling and retouching missing areas are analysed and explained as well as the material needed and general specifications. The discussed methods and techniques for repairing and retouching missing areas are implemented an six print examples. A concluding Vademekum judges and categorise the replacement and retouching of missing areas. lt shows potential applications and gives guidelines, which could be used or adopted for practical application on prints. The considerations necessary für prints that are to be exhibited are also included.
