Overview:

Abstract: The crucifixus dolorosus in the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin at Andernach-on-the-Rhine is one of the important crosses depicting christ in agony nailed to a cross resembling a forking branch. It dates from the early 14th century, its place of origin is unknown. Mounting interests of art historians and conservators in the cross in the last years have prompted me to do a thorough dissertation submitted for a diploma on the crucifix that has not been examined closely before. In order to compare the cross with similar ones dating from the same period a technological examination was carried out first. After that conservation proposals were worked out, taking the present condition of the cross into consideration.
