Abstract: The subject of this dissertation is the “Ascension of Christ” wall-painting over the chancel arch of St Mary`s church in Waren. It was painted by the artist Fritz Greve in 1913, and has been overpainted many times since 1963. The main focus of this study was the removal of the numerous layers of overpainting. A potential uncovering of this wall painting appeared technically pro-blematic and resulting damage and loss of the original substance could not be ruled out. At the outset a technical investigation of the original technique, including a condition survey and assessment were carried out. A series of uncovering tests on selected areas of the chancel arch wall, showed that a removal of these layers was possible without significantly damaging the wall-painting. A combination of a chemical/physical and mechanical method was used. Specific proposals for the uncovering of this wall painting were developed and are presented.
