Overview:

Abstract: This dissertation deals with the occurrence and usage of matt varnish – this is intentional gloss reduction by adding a matting agent – in the field of painting conservation. Following a brief historical overview of how matt varnishes have been used in art, the two main groups of matting agents wax and silica are characterized. An important part of the study was the evaluation of series of experiments where gloss of several varnishes had been reduced by adding wax or silica (ACEMATT®). In general, the use of both types of matting agents is possible, depending on the degree of gloss desired, the material of the treated object; and in case of using silica, obtaining a good dispersion. Spray application prooved to be the best way to get an even matt varnish layer.
