Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Pastel paintings are usually associated with paper and parchment supports. Pastel paintings on fabrics and especially on flocked pastel canvas which were used since the second half of the 19th century are unknown by many art historians and conservators. However, this particular technique requires specific conservation and restoration treatments. In context of this diploma thesis 16 paintings were examined, 10 of these paintings were on flocked pastel canvas. Based on literature investigation and analysis results the pastel technique and the special features of the flocked pastel canvas will be described with regard to their construction, production and used materials. Furthermore the typical damages and previous conservation treatments will be summarised and new conservation proposals will be submitted. A catalogue with analysis protocols and detailed documentations is enclosed.
