Overview:

Abstract: The Gothic stone retable from the Quirinus Chapel at St. Matthew’s Abby in Trier is one of the few well-preserved altarpieces of the 13th century, giving it thus a relevance beyond regional consideration, based on its premium paint work in the panel painting tradition of a combined technique of tempera- and distemper painting. Both tablets that jointly form the retable have been exposed to miscellaneous detrimental mechanisms, due to its storage under layers of earth and bones in the tomb of the Quirinus Chapel for over 200 years. Apart from a classification and placement in the history of arts, the aim of this dissertation has been to examine and document the asset and condition of the retable, which influence the planning and the conception of preservation, conservation and eventual exhibition.
