The medieval Salvator is carved of new red sandstone. The heavy breaking up into sheets parallel to the bedding of the stone is caused by a typical arrangement of layers of the sandstone in connection with a long period of time of weathering. Despite the sculpture still shows remains of its medieval polychromy. To develop a conservation concept and to choose, develop and verify conservation materials, the sculpture´s condition, materials and original techniques were analysed and documented. The peculiarity of this sculpture is that its back is precisely hollowed out, probably to carry sacred items.
