Abstract: The origin of the historical pigment Egyptian Green (Green Frit) was investigated by synthesising samples from 39 different mixing ratios under variation of temperature, reaction time and cooling rate. For the production of the Egyptian Green pigments silicium oxide, calcium oxide, flux and copper were needed. The composition of the experimentally manufactured Pigments was analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microprobe analysis (EPMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), Raman-microscopy and light microscopy.
It could be ascertained that a copper containing wollastonite does not cause the colour of the Egyptian Green pigments. The green, turquoise or blue colour is due to the amorphous glass phase which is coloured by copperions. The cooling ratio of the melt has an important effect on the colour. At fast cooling the spectral reflectance of the pigments shifted into green wavelength ranges.
