Renate Albrecht: Scientific and conservative assessment of desulfatation methods. back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: It is roughly 20 years that the conservation treatment of mural paintings has included desulfatation in the German speaking regions. The condition of six paintings in Bavaria and Austria, that were treated in this way, is considered here. In particular the treatment methods with Ammoniumcarbonate, Bariumhydroxide and ion exchange resins were examined, which had been carried out six months to 11 years previously. Generally speaking this method of treatment is successful, albeit the state of preservation varied, depending on the external circumstances. Simple on site examination methods were sought. These facilitate an initial control by the conservator him/herself.
