Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the late Gothic mural painting cycle in the church of St. Andreas and Stephani in Wansleben am See, which was uncovered in 1939/40. The object, its history and condition were examined in detail with the main focus on two murals in the choir. On this basis, the present need for action could be elaborated, and the measures derived were implemented in the form of a representative sample area. The conservation focus was on cleaning and consolidating the inventory, while the restoration measures included, above all, the continuation of the restoration measures from 1939/40 through fine uncovering and the reintegration of lacunae. The in-depth examination of the history of monument conservation and the widespread practices from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the Second World War, with a focus on the former province of Saxony, created the basis for placing the historical restoration by the church painter-restorer Fritz Leweke in the overarching context of the time. Since this diploma project is the first treatment of the wall paintings since they were uncovered, secured and reintegrated, they authentically reflect this important period in Saxony-Anhalt´s restoration history in their current state.
