Antonia Pia Weppler: Modern velvet mortuary bonnet with glass bead trim from the Thaldorf cemetery - concept of consolidation and conservation of the underside and the inside Back

Overview:

Abstract: This paper presents the concept of the
consolidation and conservation of a modern
glass-beaded velvet bonnet excavated in 2002
from the grave of a female individual in the
Thaldorf cemetery, Germany. The bonnet is in an
unsuitable condition for long-term storage, due
to ground storage as well as flood damage in the
storage rooms in 2013. Therefore, a concept for
the consolidation and conservation will be
developed after a detailed object survey and
scientific examination. In this context, particular
attention will be paid to the discrepancy
between the cleaning required by the
conservation approach and the associated risks
to the fragile materials. Since the areas to be
worked on are located under and inside the lying
bonnet, a way to reach them safely will be
worked out. After discussing this problem, the
conservational and restorative measures are
planned and a recommendation is made for
suitable storage conditions.
